Avalanche Science Field Day

Experience the mountains in the snow! Students will assess terrain and snow pack through hands-on application of the skills learning during the indoor Avalanche Science class. Dig a snow pit, examine snow crystals, and work together with your team to conduct a mock rescue in the snow. Avalanche Science 2-hour course at AMC is strongly recommended prior to taking a field course.
Age: 5th-12th grade
Class length: 4 hours-5 hours, offered December-April
Fee: $15/person
Location: Outdoor site in the Arapaho National Forest

The Science of Climbing Outdoors

Physical, Earth, or Life Science
Bring the concepts of friction, force, and motion to life; discover what rock types are good for climbing; or learn about adaptations needed to survive in the Rocky Mountains while learning to climb outdoors. Teachers choose science focus (physics, geology, or biology).
Age: 4th-5th grade - Life; 6th-8th grade - Geology;
7th - 10th Physics
Class length: 4 hours.
Fee: $30/person (minimum of 10)
Location: Local open space or Colorado State Park

Beginning Rock Climbing Skills

Further top-rope climbing instruction for participants wanting to build technical skills. Participants will learn to tie knots, belay, back-up belay, and strengthen technique in small groups. Instruction may also include rappeling. Equipment use and demonstration included in cost. Class can be custom designed to meet Boy Scout Climbing Badge and Grils Scout High Adventure Badge requirements.

Physiology with an Altitude Field Day

Explore the effects of mountains and cold weather on our bodies. Activities include variables in activity level, environmental conditions, clothing, hydration level, and atmospheric pressure. Experiments are conducted at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden and in the mountains.
Age: 4th-12th grade
Class length: 4-5 hours
Fee: $10/person
Location: Golden Gate Canyon State Park or nearby mountain site

Orienteering

Learn how to find you way with a topographic map and compass. Students will have an opportunity to hone their skills using paces to complete an orienteering course. Class activities may vary from simple compass skills to navigation or triangulation.

Class length: 3 hours

Location: Local open space or Bear Creek Lake Park in Morrison

Colorado Weather from the Mountains to the Plains

Gain awareness of Colorado's variable weather through observation, investigation and safety. Learn how cloud types, wind and topography provide clues about weather, and experiment with static electricity using a Van der Graff generator.

Class length: 2 hours

Colorado Landscapes: From Mesas to Mountains

Learn about Colorado's unique landforms while hiking up South Table Mountain or other local outdoor location. Class topics focus on Colorado's geology, topographic map reading, and natural resources. Hands-on activities encourage Leave No Trace and observation.
Age: 4th-8th grade
Class length: 3-4 hours
Fee: $10/person
