Wilderness Trekking School is the Colorado Mountain Club's
beginner hiking school that attracts hundreds of students each session. This is
the school to learn the BASICS of mountaineering:
Over a period of six lectures and and four field trips you will get the opportunity to:
Graduating from WTS helps you qualify for Basic Mountaineering School and gain a "C" hiking classification with the CMC. WTS is open to all Colorado Mountain Club members with any hiking classification and ability level, age 18 or older. For those members who feel they already have these skills, a WTS Waiver Form may be submitted to request that the course requirement be waived. Fall 2004 SessionWTS lectures and group meetings are held at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden, every Tuesday from 7:00 - 10:00 P.M., beginning September 21 and 28 then October 5, 12, 19 and 26. Field trips are on the weekends of October 2/3, 9/10, 23/24 and December 11/12.The field trips range from "A" to "B" level hikes, covering a variety of terrain and varying degrees of difficulty in all types of weather conditions. Be prepared to spend a full day in the field on every trip. WTS is open to all Colorado Mountain Club members with any hiking classification and ability level, age 18 or older. If you are not yet a CMC member, contact the CMC office at 303-279-3080 or complete a CMC Application Form located on this website. Graduating from WTS helps qualify you to participate in the Basic Mountaineering School, the next level of mountaineering training that the Club offers, as well as assist you in gaining a "C" hiking classification with the CMC. WTS does NOT provide a "B" classification, as there are plenty of opportunities within the CMC schedule to attain that. If you have had equivalent training/experience and do not wish to take WTS, you may submit the WTS waiver form available from this website. Students are assigned to either all-Saturday or all-Sunday field trip groups, depending upon your preference. We also try to assign students to gender-balanced and age-related groups by ability and experience. This helps you learn in a supportive atmosphere and make compatible acquaintances for future hikes. Field groups typically consist of 10-12 students with two or three instructors. If after you have completed the WTS application, you find it necessary to change your requested field trip days (Saturday to Sunday or vice versa), contact the CMC office. Field group changes will be on an "as available" basis and you cannot be guaranteed a change to another field group day. Tuition for the course is $75.00. Non-Denver group members, remit an additional $10.00. Student requests for refunds of tuition must be submitted in writing to the WTS Director via the CMC office. Requests made prior to 30 days before the beginning of the school will be processed less a $10.00 handling fee. Requests made within 30 days of the beginning of school will be refunded at 50% of the amount paid. No refunds will be made after the beginning of the school. However, a refund less $10.00 can be obtained if a person is found to take the original student's place in the school. The WTS application form is available from this website as a PDF form.
