Mountaineering and Outdoor Education361 Alpine Touring/Ski Mountaineering School |
|
|
| The Alpine Touring/Ski Mountaineering School
will be offered spring 2005. The AT/Ski Mountaineering course is designed to
acquaint CMC members with the skills, attitudes, and awareness needed for ski
mountaineering tours, such as 13'er and 14'er ski descents in Colorado, and ski
traverses such as the Haute Route in the Alps or the Wapta Traverse in Canada.
Some of the topics covered include planning and preparation, ski gear and
equipment, ski techniques, and avalanche assessment. Prerequisites include successful completion of the CMC Basic Mountaineering School or equivalent experience, the CMC Avalanche School (or other AAA or AAI level I courses), and first aid training. Skiing skills and experience comparable to a CMC Denver Group advanced skier rating would be desirable. Applicants wishing to use telemark gear must have successfully completed the CMC Telemark Ski School or equivalent. Applicants wishing to use AT gear should be comfortable on slopes equivalent to black diamond slopes at downhill ski areas. The course consists of three evening lectures and four field trips; the final field trip will be a two-day peak climb and descent. Tentative dates for the lectures are 7:00 PM on 3/1, 3/8, and 3/15 at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden. Field trips will be on 3/20, 4/3, 4/17, and a weekend in May. These dates are subject to change, so please consult the Mile High Mountaineer for the announcement of the school for 2005. To apply for the school, please contact one of the school directors. Registration for the school is by application. Cost of the School is projected at $100 and includes course materials. School directors: John Raich at 970-482-8977 or john.raich@colostate.edu, John Bickel at 303-670-3302 or jhbickel@esrt-llc.com. |
