Strategic planning for club
education
by Brenda Porter, CMC Education
Director
The education department has completed an extensive
strategic planning process to guide our education efforts for the next five
years. The planning began at the CMC Board of Directors Retreat and Council
meeting last May when members from throughout the state identified important
issues and needs for the club. They brainstormed, analyzed, and prioritized to
create overall goals for the CMC. Their work was summarized by an independent
consultant and passed to me, the Education Director. I created the draft plan,
and made it available for comment by CMC members who are interested in
education. Please contact me if you wold like to review the entire plan, have
any comments, or would like to be involved in the CMC State Education
Committee.
Three main goals will guide our efforts in education
for the next five years:
Goal I: Provide strong, qualified leadership to
direct CMC education.
1. Strengthen State & support Group Education
Committees
2. Train leaders in educational pedagogy
Goal II: Improve quality, availability, scope, and
safety of educational activities for all club members.
1. Analyze and prioritize educational needs of the
Club
2. Identify existing educational
opportunities
3. Strengthen existing educational
opportunities
4. Create and implement program
assessment
5. Develop new educational opportunities in natural
history, literature, and art, as well as recreation
6. Incorporate industry standards into our
educational program
7. Create State Educational Resource
Center
8. Develop funding sources
9. Strengthen conservation awareness and education
in all aspects of Club activities and programs
Goal III: Provide mountain related education to the
general public through the Mountain Discovery Program.
1. Develop intriguing, mission based interactive
activities that educate and entertain
2. Conduct programs for youth and families in the
AMC, outdoors, and outreach locations throughout Colorado
3. Develop and implement Teacher Training
Institute
4. Develop and implement marketing
program
5. Develop broad-based funding sources
As a result of the strategic plan, key new areas to
look for in 2000.
State Natural History School will be launched next spring. Five Saturday sessions will
include topics such as Wildflowers, Colorado Trees & Shrubs, Western
Wildlife: Birds and Mammals, and Rocky Mountain Geology.

initial course will focus on motivating students, learning styles,
