| Information about
Trail & Timberline
magazine
Trail & Timberline is the bimonthly magazine
of the Colorado Mountain Club sent to all members--over
10,000 people. This magazine contains news, announcements, and
articles of interest to members of all groups. The on-line version
of the magazine is available here.
T & T accepts articles and photographs
from freelance writers. Click here to read general writer's guidelines. It is
also helpful if writers review the stylistic conventions of the magazine before
submitting an article.
T&T always welcomes letters to the editor.
Sending an e-mail letter to the editor is the easiest
way. You can also snail-mail your letter to the address
listed below, or fax it to 303.279.9690. Letters
longer than three hundred words will not be considered.
All letters are subject to editing and are published
solely at the discretion of the editor.
Occasionally, a member of the CMC will want to
write an opinion piece that is longer than a letter to the editor.
This "op-ed" column is called "Switchbacks" and
has its own writer's guidelines. Note that
this venue is open only to members of the Colorado Mountain Club.
Publication is at the discretion of the editor.
In keeping with the portion of the Mission
of the Colorado Mountain Club to collect and disseminate information
regarding the Rocky Mountains on behalf of art, Trail &
Timberline magazine publishes poetry, though it no longer pays
for them. Click here to read
the poetry guidelines, a wonderful essay by T&T
poetry editor Jared Smith. Poems are initially submitted to
the T&T
editor.
By far, one of the most popular features of Trail
& Timberline are reports on trips that members have taken--both
in this country and abroad. People interested in writing a trip report
for publication should reference the article "How
to write a trip report" before making a submission.
With the exception of "Switchbacks"
articles, publication in Trail & Timberline is open to the general
public as well as members of the CMC. Note, however, that preference
is given to club members. Note, also, that payment for articles and
photographs is negotiated prior to submission. People interested in
receiving payment should contact
the editor and "pitch" the article before submitting
it. Trail & Timberline does not pay for unsolicited manuscripts.
T&Tregularly reviews books of potential interest
to members of the Colorado Mountain Club. Click
