Library catalog now online

The Henry S. Hall Jr. American Alpine Club Library and Colorado Mountain Club Collection now has its library catalog on the internet, making it available for online searches. The library includes 375 videos on mountaineering, rock climbing, backcountry skiing, hiking and many other subjects available for thirty-day checkout and thirty-day renewal. Many of these videos are not widely available; three thousand national and international guidebooks with a large Colorado section available for thirty-day checkout and thirty-day renewal; 250 national and international alpine journals and climbing serials, including favorites such as Climbing, Accidents in North American Mountaineering, and many more.

The catalog can be viewed at: http://americanalpineclub.library.net.

Established in 1916, the AAC library is one of the oldest alpine libraries in the U.S. and the largest such circulating library in the Western Hemisphere. If you haven’t visited the library, you’re missing out on a real treat. It has comfortable seating for reading and research, a VCR available in the library for watching videos, two full-time library staff members to assist with any mountain-related question no matter how unusual, and a rare book collection dating from the sixteenth century including the Himalayan Library of three thousand books on the world’s fourteen highest mountains.

The library is open Tuesday and Thursday noon to 7 p.m., and Wednesday and Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please contact the library at (303) 384-0112 or library@americanalpineclub.org to inquire into Saturday or Monday visits.

Any book or video in the Library (other than rare books) can also be checked out by mail. Mailing to you as a cmc member is free of charge; all you have to pay is the return postage. It’s a great resource for mountaineers and trip leaders. If you’re not sure what you want to check out by mail, just call or email the library, or check out the catalog. P
