YEP launches new climbing programs with support from Black Diamond

As the sport of rock climbing continues to grow in popularity, educators have recognized the positive influence it can have on the younger generation. The CMC’s Youth Education Program (YEP) is striving to bring more school and youth groups to the AMC. Last year, YEP served over 7,000 students, introducing them to Colorado’s mountains through science, literature, art, and recreation. This year YEP! is working to reach even more youth while increasing awareness of mountain environments through two new classes: Science of Climbing and Introduction to Rock Climbing.

Science of Climbing is a three-part program offered to students in grades 612. This hands-on class includes a focus on geology by looking at rock types of local crags in the Front Range area, discusses the physics behind anchors, and demonstrates force and motion through climbing on the wall. Introduction to Rock Climbing can be adapted for students in the fourth through twelfth grades. This introductory class includes a team-building component in conjunction with basic rock climbing skills and technique.

With help from Black Diamond Equipment Ltd., YEP is able to offer programs to larger groups. Black Diamond, a global leader in climbing and backcountry skiing equipment, secured a sponsorship with the Youth Education Program in October, donating helmets, harnesses, belay devices, and carabineers for the new climbing programs. When asked to help out, Peter Metcalf, CEO of Black Diamond quoted “We would love to help! This is exactly what we’re looking for.” Not only is the company committed to being the market leader in climbing and skiing equipment, but it also strongly supports organizations promoting conservation, education, and stewardship of mountain and crag environments.

With the development of the Science of Climbing and Introduction to Rock Climbing, YEP is focusing on promoting programs to diverse youth groups. With the help of companies such as Black Diamond and individual support, YEP is able to continue educating Colorado’s youth through hands-on mountain related activities. P
