Arlene Blum to speak at Boulder Group annual dinner Arlene Blum will be the keynote speaker at the Boulder Group Annual Dinner on Sunday, November 3, in the Glenn Miller Ballroom on the CU campus. Blum led the first American climb of Annapurna (26,500´), the world’s tenth highest peak, and completed a 2,000 mile, nine-month trek across the Himalayan regions of Bhutan, Nepal, and India. She has played a leading role in more than twenty successful mountaineering expeditions, including climbs of Mt. Everest and Mt. McKinley. She is the author of Annapurna: A Woman’s Place (Sierra Club Books); has a doctorate in biophysical chemistry; and has taught at Stanford University, Wellesley College, and U. C. Berkeley, where her research was instrumental in banning tris, a cancer-causing chemical that was used as a flame retardant on children’s sleepwear. Her articles and photographs have appeared in many publications including National Geographic, Smithsonian, and Science magazines. The CMC Boulder Group cordially invites you to attend the dinner and hear Ms Blum speak. Drought expert to speak at Shining Mountains dinner Lee Rozaklis, founder of Hydrosphere, and an expert on drought, will headline the Shining Mountains Group annual dinner in Estes Park on Saturday, November 9, 2002. From his study of tree rings and other data, Rozaklis has data on the Boulder Creek Basin from as early as 1705. Referring to the recent drought in Colorado, he notes, “There has never been a year like this.” Rozaklis will discuss the problem and magnitude of Colorado’s current drought, the short-term and long-term projections on the drought, and the scientific recommendations for mitigation of drought effects. The dinner will feature international cuisine in the elegant ambience of The View restaurant at the Crags (Golden Eagle Resort) in Estes Park. Cost of the evening is $16.
