Natural history and
environmental issues school

Please join us in the beautiful Handies and Redcloud proposed wilderness areas for a weekend of wilderness and environmental issues training, as well as opportunities for exploration of this amazing part of Colorado. Mark Schmalz and Clare Bastable of the Western Slope group will be leading this weekend adventure, where participants will examine characteristics of wilderness and hear from key speakers on the wilderness movement in Colorado and federal management of public lands. In addition, we will be trained in the Leave No Trace principles and learn about the specific flora and fauna of this area.

We will use the Colorado Trail Foundation Education Center on the Alpine Loop near Lake City as our home base. The class sessions will take place outside. The fee is $60 for food, educational materials, and instruction (including support of State Education). You need to bring your own tent and sleeping bag. Please contact the CMC office in Golden at (800) 633-4417, or (303) 279-3080 to register for this course. Graduate credit, for an extra $35, is available through Adams State College.

Science of Climbing
teacher institute offered

The Youth Education Program (YEP) is offering a three-day teacher training for teachers on June 18–20, 2002. Geology, physics, and conservation science will come to life through hands-on activities at our new climbing wall in the AMC and fieldtrips to Golden’s outdoor geology classroom. No prior rock climbing experience is needed. Curriculum is designed especially for fifth through ninth grades, but all teachers are welcome to attend. Fee is $50 for the three day session with an additional $40 for teacher re-certification credit through the Colorado School of Mines.

More outerwear needed for
youth in wilderness project

Thanks to all who have donated some great clothing to the Youth in Wilderness project. We still need all sizes of rain gear, warm jackets, gloves, hats, and daypacks. Your extra gear (that is clean and in good condition) will help provide a positive mountain experience for youth and will build on a donation received from REI in support of this project. Adult as well as children’s sizes are appreciated.

Meet the mountains

Young mountain lovers 2–5 years old and a caregiver are invited to join us for daytime programming. In addition to monthly Monday programs, a new four-week series will be offered in July. Call Stacey Norman at (303) 279-3080 x111 for more information.

State instructor training a success

On April 6, dedicated volunteer instructors from CMC schools devoted an extra Saturday to improving their teaching and safety skills. More than thirty instructors from Ft. Collins, Boulder, Denver, and Pikes Peak Groups came to the American Mountaineering Center in Golden to learn effective teaching techniques and risk management for schools. In addition, the new climbing wall in the AMC was inaugurated with a fun afternoon of climbing.

The training was sponsored by the CMC State Education Committee as part of an on-going effort to support CMC education throughout the club. Please contact Brenda Porter or Greg Long, Education Committee Chair, with suggestions of how the State Committee can support education in your Group. Interested members are invited to attend the State Education Committee meetings, which are held the first Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. with conference calling available.
