Yesteryear By Kathleen “Kay” Hubbard 25 years ago The CMC Boulder Group’s Brainard Cabin is probably the most popular and well-known of ski tourer’s huts in Colorado. Located a few hundred feet NW of Brainard Lake. The tract of land it occupies is under a 99 year lease from the Forest Service. The annual Thanksgiving Feast is cooked at the cabin. Plans are on for a Colorado high-country Bike Tour this June. It is a strenuous eight-day seven-night 487-mile loop tour of the central Colorado Rockies, originating in Boulder, crossing the Continental Divide six times. It includes cycling scenic passes such as Loveland, Hoosier, Independence, Tennessee, and Fremont. 50 years ago Bob Ormes advises that the Guide Book is now in the printer’s hands and is due for publication by the University of Denver. Our CMC president’s message states, as we start our fifth decade of our organization, we have had our ups and downs. In 1922, we were 1,114 strong. In 1940 there were fewer than half as many, and it wasn’t until 1944 that our membership started increasing again. We number 900 now. 75 years ago The actual repeal of the Rocky Mountain National Park is threatening Colorado if our state does not live up to its promise. This club is of very little permanent value unless it can unite and express public opinion on outdoor matters. The CMC actively participated in negotiatioins leading to the organization of Rocky Mountain National Park in 1915, and must now act again—and write our representatives. |
