Opportunities to get involved By Sarah Peters, volunteer coordinator Marketing Committee members Are you a marketing whiz? The Marketing committee is looking for individuals to participate on three recently formed sub-committees. The subcommittees are state-level marketing, in charge of CMC public image and state-level objectives; events, planning, and publicizing CMC events; and consulting support for CMC entities, helping committees, groups, etc., with their marketing needs. Natural History Committee Help enhance the CMC’s mission statement through the continued development of this new committee, which has already organized natural history hikes as well as the new Natural History School. Archives Committee chairman Catalog and maintain the eighty-nine-year history of the CMC. Old photos, reports, peak registers, T&Ts, meeting minutes, and more are waiting for eager history buffs to review, organize, and protect. Some of these archival records will be used in the new Mountaineering Museum. Group and Member Services Committee members Add your two cents to increasing the value of CMC membership for members of all CMC Groups through support and recruitment. This committee has created a member handbook and member survey. You can join chair Rolf Asphaug and be part of upcoming initiatives. Funds Development Keep the CMC’s programs and activities alive by working to obtain long-term funding. Join chairman Alice White in this critical committee. Peak Register Committee chair Take charge of the Peak Register committee, organizing others to assemble CMC peak registers for the busy summer season and file registers returned from previous years. Library Committee members Have a voice in selecting the books to be purchased by the CMC for our collection housed at the world-class American Alpine Club Library at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden. Library volunteers Attention former librarians and bookworms. Inventory maps, shelve books, catalog books from archives, translate titles from foreign languages, view videos for cataloging purposes, or examine new books. The list goes on for opportunities available in the AMC Library, so call. We especially need help the first Saturday of each month from 10–4. Directors for state CMC board Every year, five new directors are chosen by the State Council to join the CMC State Board of Directors. We’re looking for representation of a wide range of interests, backgrounds, and viewpoints on the board. If you have an interest in being a director and being involved in setting basic CMC policies, please call to be put in touch with the right folks. ORIC volunteers Impart knowledge of public lands to the general public through volunteering at the Outdoor Recreation Information Center, located at REI’s Flagship store in downtown Denver. We have several dedicated volunteers already giving advice to the public but can use more. Volunteers who donate twenty-five hours over a three-month period are eligible for a discount on purchases at REI. CMC Junior Mountaineers (formerly Denver Juniors) sponsors Interested in working with youth? Join in rejuvenating the historic Denver Juniors Group into an exciting new organization for people aged 13–18 across Colorado. Lead trips, advise student leaders, or assist with conservation, membership, and more. Special events volunteers Come and see the shows for free by handing out programs or taking tickets at CMC functions. Or maybe you’d prefer to spend a part of your day sharing the word about the CMC with others at an informational booth at a festival in your area? Either way, please give me a call. CMC Press opportunities The Colorado Mountain Club Press has had great success in publishing new titles over the past two years; all of them completely produced by volunteers. Now CMC Press is looking to expand with several new books on outdoor themes. And once again we are looking for volunteer help from interested members. We have a budget for all the materials you will need, and as an added bonus, you will see your name prominently in our books. For information beyond the descriptions below, or to volunteer, contact Terry Root at 303-279-3080 x103 or at roott@cmc.org. CMC Press Assistant Editor Help develop new CMC Press books by researching short topics through the library, on the Internet, and elsewhere. Then write about these new ideas in support of their development. A curious mind and good writing skills are a must. Graphic Designer Assist with preparing digital art for various book projects, such as drawing route maps for a new hiking guide or designing a sales brochure. Prior knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, or Quark Xpress required. CMC Press web development We need someone to help design and maintain a CMC Press website, beginning Spring 2002. Outdoor photographers Attention camera buffs who like to take hikes. The CMC Press is looking for advanced photographers who are willing to take a hike and shoot photos. Photos will be used in support of specific book and calendar projects. Field route checkers Been in the backcountry lately? Then maybe you can help the CMC Press with the development of new books. We need people to help with field checking of routes. Simply document your findings on the easy-to-use form after you’ve finished the route, and send it in. We especially need snowshoers this winter and next who have time to check out routes for a new CMC guidebook. This spring and summer we need hikers to check trails in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and in the Great Sand Dunes areas. |
