Mt. Sneffels 14,150' - Trip Report

June 1997

Last year (1997) I climbed Sneffels from Blaine Basin during the last
weakend of June. We took the "east slopes" approach, so I'm not
much help on what you can expect on the north face, although I can
tell you that you should expect company. We ran across a couple
parties who were there to do the snake s couloir.

We were able to drive all the way to the trailhead as described on
p. 185 of Roach. One thing to anticipate (not mentioned in Roach) is
that you will be making four stream crossings. (An EVEN number of
stream crossings is frustrating, but times 2 is maddening). The
stream crossings weren't that tough, but they weren't that easy
either. They did make some people in our party hesitate. We saw one
person on the trail who came prepared for these stream crossings --
she was hiking in sandals.

We camped at about 10,600 to 10,800. There wasn't that much snow at
this location at this time, but just above this location (11,000+) it was all
snow. For mid-June, I would anticipate a fair amount of snow at the
higher locations of Blaine Basin.

By the way, this is a great place to camp and Sneffels is a fun peak
to do in June. The glissade on the East Slope is mucho fun.
