Thunder Pyramid

Sat-Sun, September 11-12, 1999
Thunder Pyramid, 13,932', and UN 13,722'

Four of us backpacked Saturday afternoon from Maroon Lake to a campsite below treeline up West Maroon Creek. There was light rain on the way in but the skies cleared for the evening. We left camp around 7 am under cloudy skies and climbed grassy slopes, talus, and a couple of cliff bands into the basin just west of the peaks. Following Garratt and Martin's route description, we climbed the narrow, well-defined couloir that ends at a col just north of UN 13,722'. This couloir has collected an impressive amount of large unstable rocks. There was a few inches of new snow in the upper portions of the couloir. We followed the route to the two summits and descended from Thunder Pyramid near the "White Couloir" route. To avoid all that loose rock on the west sides of these peaks, I might be tempted to try to climb these peaks from East Maroon Creek. Looking at a possible route from the top shows fairly benign grass and talus slopes. There are a few cliff bands that might be avoided through careful route finding.
