Crestone Peak

We visited the Crestone Peak area, from the South Colony Lakes access, on 4th of July weekend. We intended to summit Crestone Peak, but fierce winds blew from Thursday through Sunday, so we settled for Humboldt Saturday. A few parties made it up the Needle, the Peak, or Kit Carson, but most of the hikers we met didn't venture forth to those summits. The rough 4WD road is passable and snow-free. The NW couloir of Crestone Peak is reported to still have substantial snow, although the south red couloir was said to be almost snow-free. There is a minor amount of snow just under the north face of the Broken Hand - Needle saddle. The winds blew in excess of 50 mph for most of the weekend, and low cloud coverage on Sunday put an end to any thoughts of trying to summit. There were approximately 20 vehicles at the upper TH, with another 15 or so at the lower parking areas at the edge of the trees. The work done last year by the volunteer crew on Humboldt is outstanding, and was a major topic of discussion for all hikers.
