Seasonal Wildlife Closure

This area is usually closed to all users February 1st through July 31st to protect nesting and roosting sites of eagles and falcons. These closures have been posted on the City of Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks website under Trail and Area Closures to Protect Wildlife. This page was originally created because of access problems with the southern approach in 1995. This approach came in from Plainview and was a lot easier. A combination of events closed this access. The tunnels are used by Amtrak and owned by a private railroad. Security was increased after the same railroad experienced sabotage of their tracks that derailed an Amtrak train.

Residents at Plainview also reported having trouble accessing their property due to climbers parking cars in front of the gates. (I was there and it was climbers who did it.) They requested that the sheriff eliminate parking there and no parking signs are posted now.
