E-mail List Service

The Colorado Mountain Club is a partner in Climber.org to provide e-mail list services. Lists are available on several subjects to allow people to receive information by e-mail. All that is required is an e-mail address to subscribe to most lists.

What is an e-mail list?

An e-mail list is quite literally a list of e-mail addresses that are all sent the same message. Someone wanting to send a message to those on the list, sends the message to one address and everyone on the list receives that message, the sender does not need to know everyone's address. Anyone on the list gets there by subscribing their address to the list and can unsubscribe at any time to remove it.

Unlike most messages sent to many people, the message received does not contain the addresses of everyone else on the list, usually just the sender's address, the address of the list, and the subscriber's (your address). This allows for privacy so if you subscribe, no one else will see your address unless you sent the message.

If everyone used one list to send and receive messages, then no matter what the subject of the message, everyone would receive each message. Many people would be receiving messages on subjects that they have no interest in. To solve this, we have set up a number of lists on specific subjects so that people can subscribe to just the ones they want.

Not all lists are created equal!

In addition to varying by subject, lists vary in function to suit their purpose. Discussion lists accept messages from subscribers, any subscriber can send a message to the list and everyone will receive it. Announcement lists only send out messages and no discussion occurs. Subscription to a list varies, open subscription lets anyone subscribe and closed subscription is limited those approved by meeting some criteria like CMC membership.

The following lists are of interest to CMC members:

Enter all the information in step 1 including your CMC membership number if you are subscribing to the member only lists. In step 2, check all the lists in which you want to subscribe. Push the SEND button in step 3. You will shortly receive a confirmation request for each list you subscribed to, this prevents someone from signing others up unwillingly.
