I have recieved a lot of mail from people planning to visit Colorado. It may take me a while to respond, if at all, due to my real job. Maintaining this site also takes a lot of time along with the club computers, leading trips and instructing in schools.

LMLV-1 LiftoffThe picture at the right is of the Athena-1 launch just before midnight on August 22nd, 1997, from the western Space Shuttle launch pad (SLC 6) at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. This was the first ever successful launch from SLC 6 - built in the 60's for the MOL project and rebuilt in the 80's for the Space Shuttle. This mission successfully launched a NASA satellite into a sun-synchronous orbit.

This is the project that had me traveling to California for three years. I'm the lead for the verification and validation of the flight software on the vehicle. We have had other launches since then including NASA's Lunar Prospector and Ikonos for Space Imaging in Thornton.

About the Top Photo

The above photo was taken on the summit Ixta in Mexico. In the background is Popo, which we had climbed two days before. This was a Club HAMS trip lead by Terry Root and I was his co-leader. A few days latter we also climbed Orizaba.

For Terry and I, these 17,000 to 18,700 foot peaks were training trips. Three weeks later on another Club HAMS trip, we were on the summit of Aconcogua in Argentina at an elevation of 22,800 feet.
