FOR MAY 22 HIGH ALTITUDE PROGRAM
The program for the May 22 H.A.M.S. meeting will be a presentation and
slide show by
Brian MacLean and others from the 1988 "Cowboys on Everest"
expedition, which involved
35 climbers. Trip participants included 12
Coloradoans as well as two Wyoming high
school students and a Wyoming
educator. The students and teacher were selected from
statewide
applications so that they would have the opportunity to participate in this
adventure and relate their experiences to others around the state.
The expedition, which did not use Sherpas, constituted the first American
attempt of
the North/Northeast ridge route, which has yet to be climbed.
Unique approaches to marketing the expedition included the conduct of
medical research
using the recently developed portable "Gamow Bag" for
treatment of HAPE/HACE at
altitude; geological work using more recent
dating techniques to determine how and
when various geologic features of
the area were formed; and high-tech audio and video
communications links
to the outside world on a real-time basis.
Come and learn about this recent and innovative attempt on Everest by a
group from
the Rocky Mountain Region! We start at 7.

#Volume 1 Number 2
The High Altitude Section is pleased to announce its first field training
exercise
scheduled for Sunday, June 4, 1989. This will be an excellent
opportunity for those
persons planning trips to Mount Rainier, Alaska, or
Canada this summer to learn the
basic techniques of crevasse rescue. This
one day field trip will cover the placing
of protection in snow, tying off
the fallen climber, and rescue by the Z pulley
system.
Participants must have BMS or equivalent; and have a harness, ice axe,
crampons, and
helmet. H.A.M.S. will provide ropes and other equipment. The
trip will be announced
also in the Denver Group newsletter. Sign up with
the Denver clubrooms; don't delay
as spaces in the exercise will be
limited. For further information, contact the
coordinator, Terry Root.

The summer picnic for the High Altitude Mountaineering Section will be on
Wednesday,
July 26, from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM at the Genesee Park shelter
in the foothills. Bring
food and beverages. Park rules prohibit alcohol
stronger than beer and no glass
containers! This will be a good time for
all, and an opportunity for members to meet
each other. The time will be
right to discuss past climbs and future endeavors.

DEADLINE FOR NEXT ISSUE: Monday, August 14, 1989
For those interested in climbing Aconcagua, I have copied well over 100
pages of
material, including articles, route descriptions, drawings, and
maps. Cost is
$12.50 to cover photocopying and postage.
The High Altitude Section of the C.M.C./Denver Group held its second
regularly
scheduled meeting on Monday, March 20, 1989. Chairman Dan Leeth
opened the meeting
with a series of reports from the various committees,
and followed by announcements.
It was reported that the Section had 122
paid members. The next meeting will be on
Monday, May 22 at the usual
time. The program will be the folks from the Wyoming
"Cowboys on Everest"
expedition that tried the peak last year.
Dan then introduced Magda King who gave a thrilling presentation of her
solo
attempt of Yalung Kang, the world's 5th highest peak at 27,905.
Kris Maine, a Section member from Aurora, has information available
regarding five
day expeditions/seminars to Mount Rainier by the Mount
Rainier & Company. There are
7-8 trips planned for summer, 1989 with
approximate cost of $425. For information,
call Kris.
As you can all see, we now have a name for the newsletter. Thanks to Bill
Schmitt,
Judy Childers, and Jake Holmes who all tied with the same
selection. Thanks also to
Ward Hobert, Vicki Copeland, and Charlie Winger
who made the selection process a
tough one with their good suggestions.
It's time to identify some of the hard workers making this Section go;
other committee
chairs are invited to submit names of their volunteers for
the September issue.
Dan Leeth, Chairman; Malcolm Wentling, Secretary/Treasurer; Chip
Drumwright, Program;
Terry Root, Education; Steve Bonowski, Newsletter;
John Landers, Data Processing;
Tom Maceyka, Research; and Keith Jensen,
Social. Newsletter persons are Kris Wallack,
John Wallack, Judy Childers,
Bill Schmitt, Mary Ann Davitt, and Carol Albright.
Thanks are due to Steve Smith of Broomfield and Dave Hart of Denver for
submitting
reports on their climbs of Aconcagua and Kilimanjaro
respectively for the Section
data base.
Volunteer Needs: the Section committees for Education, Program, Research,
and Data
Processing could use some additional volunteers. One pressing
need is for some folks
to help run the High Altitude Seminar this fall. If
you have some time to give,
please call the appropriate committee chair,
or drop a note to that person at the
Clubrooms in care of the High
Altitude Section. Thanks.
Changes Coming: we hope that Section members like what is seen with the
newsletter.
For this issue, we've added a masthead with the new name of
the newsletter, and also
some headlines. Thanks to Bill Schmitt, we will
begin using a desktop publishing
format with the September issue. We also
want to add some specific "departments" for
climbing partners; trip
partners; equipment wanted to buy, sell, or borrow, etc.
Naturally, CMC
assumes no liability for persons who get together for trips. This
newsletter is for all members of the Section. We do have some space
limitations.
But we want to hear from you and we want to publish what you,
the members, want to
see published. Let us hear from you.
Steve Bonowski
Trip Reports Wanted: the Research committee has finished its work on
the trip report
data form. We encourage all members to tell us of your
recent high-altitude climbs
and treks. We NEED YOUR HELP in order to make
the data base a worthwhile item. Feel
free to clip or copy the report form
on pages 3-4 of this issue.
