WELCOME!

The High Altitude Mountaineering Section has been formed to
promote high altitude climbing within the Colorado Mountain Club. To do
that, we have an aggressive program that will provide a host of
opportunities for climbers interested in scaling summits higher than our
local fourteeners.

This is our first newsletter. In future editions we will list trips
looking for climbers and climbers looking for trips. We will also Include
write-ups on recent trips and news clippings about high altitude climbs.
If you have something you think would be of Interest to our members, send
it in. If you want to find climbing partners, let us know.

Meetings are scheduled for January, March, May, September and November.
In addition to Section business, each will feature a program of interest
to lovers of high places. Some may be slide shows or videos, others
educational. If you know of a good program, please let us know.

Our meetings will also serve as a place to find other climbers interested
in climbing high peaks. To make sure that we have plenty of opportunity
for networking, we even hope to have a party or two!

One of the problems facing climbers going off into unknown places is
securing information. The High Altitude Section hopes to put together a
data base of information about peaks. We will solicit "trip reports" from
climbers who have recently done climbs. These will be cataloged and
available to CMC members. In addition, we want to establish a computer
data base of names of climbers who have done various peaks. In this way,
members can contact others who have been to the target peak.

Training members to climb high peaks is another task to be addressed by
the High Altitude Section. We will continue to present our autumn High
Altitude Mountaineering Seminar featuring world class climbers discussing
various aspects of the sport. In addition, we will look into establishing
a High Altitude Mountaineering School and various weekend training
programs such as crevasse rescue training, low angle ice climbing, etc.

Finally, it is hoped that the Section will help sponsor official CMC
climbs in the high regions of the world. If the Iowa Mountaineers can do
it, why can't we? Right now, we can help those wanting to get CMC
approval for their trips (whether "outings" or "expeditions").

Any CMC member with an interest in climbing high is invited to join. You
do not need to live along the Front Range to benefit from the section!
Since high altitude climbers come from all parts of the state, we want to
attract members from all groups of the CMC.

If you are not already a member of the High Altitude Mountaineering
Section, all that is needed to join is a payment of $5. A membership form
is included elsewhere in this newsletter.

We are excited about the possibilities that the High Altitude
Mountaineering Section provides. To make it all come off, we need
interested members and willing volunteers. Everyone with an interest in
helping out is invited to complete and return the VOLUNTEERS NEEDED form.

MARCH MEETING & PROGRAM

In September, 1987, Colorado Mountain Club member Magda King attempted to climb
solo to the summit of Yalung Kang, the 27,905 west summit of Kangchenjunga. Had
she succeeded, she would have been the first woman in history to solo an 8,000
meter peak. But, a lost down parka, missing food, deteriorating weather, and an
injury to the photographer accompanying her spoiled the plans. At our next High
Altitude Mountaineering Section meeting, Magda will tell the story of this
adventure through her slide show "Yes We Kan."

The meeting will be held on Monday evening, March 20, at 7:00 PM in the
Clubroom at 2530 West Alameda Ave. in Denver.

ANNUAL DINNER SPEAKER NEEDED

The High Altitude Mountaineering Section has accepted the responsibility for
finding a program for the annual Denver Group dinner. The gala event is
scheduled for Saturday evening, November 11, and will be held in a hotel some-
where in the metro area. Last year's speaker, Gerry Roach, presented a program
about his quest for the Seven Summits.

This year, we need an equally fine program of universal mountaineering interest.
Ideally, the speaker should be a well known "world class" mountaineer who has
done an outstanding climb of a well known major peak. The photography and
narration needs to be first rate. If you have suggestions for a speaker who fits
these requirements, please call Dan Leeth, or drop a card to the High Altitude
Mountaineering Section at the Denver clubroom. Include your name, address,
day & evening phone numbers.

CONTEST, CONTEST, CONTEST, CONTEST

The Section would like to have a "snappy, attention getting" name for this news-
letter and we will award a one year subscription ($18 value) to Summit for the
winning entry. Send your suggestions for name, with masthead if you want, to
the CMC clubroom, "ATTN: H.A.M.S. Contest" by April 10. Marilyn will hold each
entry unopened until the deadline. She'll then open each and assign a number
(don't have your name on the form, but on a separate sheet). The Executive
Committee will review the entries and select the winner, who will then be identi-
fied from Marilyn's previously concealed list. ExCom members are not eligible.
Please note that your suggestion must fit in the available space at top of page 1.
Questions: call or write to Steve Bonowski .

HIGH ALTITUDE SECTION ORGANIZES: JANUARY 17, 1989

The first general meeting of the newly organized High Altitude Section was held on
January 17, 1989. Dan Leeth was appointed by the Denver Group Council as the first
chairman of the Section. The meeting opened with a discussion on how the Section
would be organized, followed by a solicitation for volunteers. Malcolm Wentling
was elected as Secretary/Treasurer by the 80+ Section members present. The evening
concluded with a well-received slide show by Dan: "Aconcagua: Going for the Dream.'

ODDS 'N ENDS

Unfortunately, we're running out of space for this first issue. Next time, we’ll
identify our ExCom members, the Newsletter Committee members, etc. In the meantime,
think about what you want to be in the newsletter. Do you have suggestions, articles
even photos. What about equipment needs, blurbs seeking climbing partners, etc.
We'll print as much as we can, space permitting. Next deadline will be April 10.

FULL MOON PARTY

Celebrate the best time of the month to "bag a summit." Party will be April 21 at
7:00 PM, and will be a potluck with food and drink.

Further information will be given at the March 20 High Altitude meeting.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED: BUY, TRADE, OR BORROW

I need the following items by June 1 for a summer expedition: expedition pack,
expedition weight down bag, down booties, down mittens, down pants, wind jacket,
and collapsible ski poles.

Alannah McTighe

DEADLINE FOR NEXT ISSUE

Material for the next issue should be in the CMC Clubrooms, "ATTN: High Altitude
Section", by no later than Monday, April 10. We can publish almost anything so long
as proper credit is given. Remember our space limits; 5 page articles will likely
end up in the H.A.M.S. data base for trips rather than in the newsletter.
