BACKPACKING SCHOOL 2004

The Backpacking School is an introductory mountaineering class open to all CMC members regardless of hiking classification. It's a great way to learn the skills to have a safe and enjoyable time in the mountains and meet others with similar interests.
Similar to the Wilderness Trekking School, you will learn basic mountaineering skills. This includes what to carry with you, what to wear, what to eat, map and compass skills, basic first aid and survival skills, weather and avalanche awareness and winter travel skills (snow shoes and ice ax).
The Backpacking School also teaches backpacking skills (tents, cooking, etc.), does its field training during four overnight backpacking trips and runs its sessions from August through December so students experience the range of warm and cold weather mountaineering conditions. Field trips are at a "B" hiking classification level. Students should feel comfortable hiking at a "B" level.
The school consists of two separate segments:
Seminar Series: eight classroom sessions. The cost for Backpacking School Seminar is $85 ($95 if not a Denver group member) which covers the materials and facilities. Checks should be payable to the CMC and indicate "Backpacking School Seminar" and your membership number. The Denver Group's cancellation/refund policy applies.
Field Techniques: four weekend-overnight field technique sessions and one day-trip. To participate in the Field Techniques segment of the school, you must either be enrolled in or have previously completed the Seminar Series. You must provide your own equipment and food used on the field trips. Car-pooling to field locations is encouraged. There is no cost for the Field Techniques segment of the course.
To graduate from Backpacking School, you must attend at least seven of the eight classroom sessions and attend all of the Field Techniques trips. Completion of the Seminar segment and graduation from the Field Techniques segment of the Backpacking School satisfies the prerequisite for the Basic Mountaineering School (BMS) and provides students with a "B" rating. If both segments are completed in the same year, MOFA certification is also possible.
