About the Colorado Mountain Club

We are organized to:
  • unite the energy, interest, and knowledge of the students, explorers, and lovers of the mountains of Colorado;
  • collect and disseminate information regarding the Rocky Mountains in behalf of science, literature, art, and recreation;
  • stimulate public interest in our mountain area;
  • encourage the preservation of forests, flowers, fauna, and natural scenery; and
  • render readily accessible the alpine attractions of this region.

The Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) is the premier outdoor club in the Rocky Mountain Region. The CMC covers the entire spectrum of human powered mountain activities to provide as many avenues of expression for our members as possible. From the high adventure of scaling an ice tower to the beauty of an afternoon nature walk, we do it all. Statewide, the CMC sponsors some 2,400 separate mountain activities annually.

The CMC is much more than a hiking club. The Club offers members a wide variety of activities including: conservation programs; trail work; educational opportunities; publications; access to the largest mountaineering library in the western hemisphere; natural history programs; and social activities. A small sample of these are open to the public and listed on our public calendar.

CMC provides programs to the community. Subjects include conservation, natural history, travel, and outdoor skills. Our Youth Education Program offers hands-on educational opportunities for kids and adults. The Information Service on this web site also provides a wealth of information about these subjects. Please see our public calendar for currently scheduled programs.

Groups

CMC is organized into local groups around the state including one for members living outside of Colorado called "Friends of Colorado". The local groups provide mountain activities, programs, newsletters and educational opportunities for members. Please see Join a Group for information about a group near you.

Membership information programs are offered in Golden. Please call (303) 279-3080, ext. 2, for the time of the next membership program or check our calendar. For specific questions, call (303) 279-3080, ext. 2, weekdays.

American Mountaineering Center

The CMC and the American Alpine Club purchased the historic Golden Junior High School building in downtown Golden and established The American Mountaineering Center. The renovated Center includes a 365-seat auditorium and the largest mountaineering library in the western hemisphere. Coming soon are the mountaineering museum and a conference center. Our state offices are located in the Center.
