Colorado Mountain Club has been a leading
voice in conservation and outdoor recreation.
Now the CMC launches a new book series which
strives to develop and nurture that same
love for the outdoors in our children and
young adults. In planning this series, the
CMC faced a challenge. In a world of sophisticated
media where children have so many other
options than reading, how do you hold interest
so that your message can get through?
With expertise from the CMC, whose Youth
Education Program serves thousands of kids
yearly, and working with the Butterfly Pavilion,
one of the nation's experts in reaching
children about nature, the result was Morpha:
A Rain Forest Story. Using an exciting narrative
that brims with adventure, quirky and amusing
characters, and an upbeat conclusion that
gives children hope for the future, the
book teaches kids in a fun and entertaining
way about today's environmental challenges
and issues. Richly drawn, full-color illustrations
bring the spectacular, rain forest world
of Morpha to life. Whimsy is a major factor
here - kids will revisit the book time and
again to search out the weird, half-hidden,
side-characters that peer from beneath a
leaf or circle the sky. A short message
from world-renowned conservationalist Dr.
Jane Goodall focuses the meaning of the
book for kids.
Morpha is the first from The Colorado Mountain
Club's "Wilderness Kids" children's
book series, developed to nurture an appreciation
of nature and science, teach outdoor skills,
and foster environmental responsibility
in kids. Future books in the series will
be appearing at the rate of twice a year.
All will have great stories about the outdoors,
fantastic art, illustrated glossaries, Teacher's
Help pages designed for today's educational
standards (for optional classroom use),
plus most will have fun activities that
compliment the stories and help hold the
child's interest.
