Climbing Helped Change Drew's Life
The
story of a recent student participant provides a clear picture
about the importance of our innovative education program:
Drew,
a student at one of our partner schools, couldn't focus on assignments,
interact positively with his peers, or communicate with others.
In addition to deafness, Drew has autism. His dad sent us the
following thanks, "We could write a book trying to explain
what this program [CMC] means to Drew. The biggest challenge
(among many) Drew has is interacting with people. Drew's deafness
isolates him from the hearing world and Drew's autism (which
impairs his ability to use language) isolates Drew from his
signing peers. When we find an activity that Drew can be successful
at and share with others, then that's a rare and precious thing.
Drew's aide tells me that one reason he delights in climbing
is that other kids try to help him and thereby become involved
in his activity (in his world). Drew desperately wants to interact
with his peers but doesn't know how
. I just can't express
to you how important that is. We all work very hard to try and
create those moments for Drew and its wonderful when it works."
